Matthew 12:46-13:58

#23: Thursday, 19 March, 2020

**Thursday, 19 March — Responding to the Messiah. Matthew 12:46–13:58**

The lengthy reading passage represents a series of reflections rather than formal commentary.

The passage reveals a structural pattern bracketed by two family references: Jesus' family initially appearing concerned about his sanity (per Mark's account), and later, townspeople rejecting him based on his ordinary background. This framework introduces the theme of responding to the Messiah.

Jesus as Teacher of Wisdom

Matthew positions Jesus within the Old Testament Wisdom tradition, a rich theological heritage often overlooked in Christian teaching. Jesus is the Teacher of Wisdom, and true wisdom transcends mere human cleverness — it represents recognition of God and willingness to receive the Creator in humility.

Matthew strategically quotes Psalm 78:2, identifying Jesus as Israel's ultimate Shepherd, echoing Davidic imagery. The passage poses critical questions: Will Israel accept its divine Messiah, or repeat history by rejecting God, facing exile again?

The family references symbolically represent not merely Jesus' earthly relatives but rather all Israel, and potentially all humanity. Matthew bookends these symbols deliberately, asking: "How will we respond to the Messiah?"

Proverbs 2 exemplifies Old Testament Wisdom teaching that Jesus fulfills. True wisdom involves seeking God's knowledge with earnest dedication, understanding fear of the Lord, and recognizing divine treasures.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I bow my head before you and acknowledge that you alone are the source of all wisdom. In you are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I long to be wise in you, my God. Help me to recognise those treasures and be prepared to give all that I have to share in your kingdom. Amen.
